140th Year Celebration!

Trinity Episcopal Church has deep roots in the De Soto, Missouri Community, as it was established as a worship group in 1866, just nine years after Thomas Fletcher (later Governor of Missouri) and Louis Rankin platted the original town site. As the congregation grew, $1000.00 was raised, and on April 17, 1871 the titles to Trinity's current site (which consists of two lots), were purchased for $100.00. A simple frame construction was originally proposed, but since stone was plentiful at a nearby quarry from, 'the top of the hill', the vestry decided to establish a presence that would last for 'eternity'. For this reason, Trinity's building is essentially the oldest unmodified church in Jefferson County, Missouri. The cornerstone was laid on July 24, 1871 and the construction was completed that year. Virtually the entire interior including the choir stalls, communion rails, prayer desk, lectern, bishop's chair, clergy chair, pews and alter were crafted and hand carved locally. These articles are all in use to this day.

Trinity's parish history includes that of members from all parts of Jefferson County, since it is the only Episcopal (Anglican) Church within. The church could not have sustained, however, without strong local support from the families of Cunningham, Hamel, Rowe, Walker, and Chapin(to mention just a very few).

Trinity has a rich history and has been visited by two Presiding Bishops of the Episcopal Church; Jefferson Davis (former president of the Confederacy and a devout Episcopalian); and many other elected officials and leaders over the years. Popular clergy, included the Reverend Vincent Penley, who tragically perished in the 1922 Sulphur Springs train wreck (buried in the city cemetery); the Reverend Richard Burns (member of the De Soto City Council and became Mayer Pro Tem); the Reverend Chandler Crawford; and the Reverend Clifford Smart. The last priest-in-charge, the Reverend Beverly Van Horne, recently left to become the interim dean of the Episcopal School for Ministry in St. Louis.

Trinity will celebrate its 140th anniversary on Sunday July 24, 2011. Regular services will commence at 10:00 AM with an open-house immediately following. All original church records from the 1860's will be on display for inspection. A locally designed church marker has been created and will be unveiled at the event. The public is welcome to attend.

City of De Soto Proclamation
City of De Soto Proclamation signed by Mayor Werner C. Stichling will be presented to the Warden, Vestry, and Congregation on July 24, 2011.

The public is invited and will be welcomed to attend.
